FAO Outlines Risks of Plastic Pollution to Food Safety, Calls for One Health Policy Approach

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has issued a stark warning about the pervasive role of plastic pollution within global agrifood systems, urging governments to adopt a One Health policy approach. In a newly released technical brief, the organization details how plastics and their associated chemical pollutants migrate seamlessly between soil, crops, animals, and humans. This interconnected cycle poses significant risks to food safety and overall environmental health, moving far beyond the simple issue of litter to become a systemic threat to the biological foundations of our food supply.

The scale of the problem is immense, with millions of tons of plastics utilized every year for everything from greenhouse covers and coated fertilizers to food packaging. Current estimates suggest roughly 13.4 million tons of agricultural plastics are used annually, a figure expected to climb significantly by 2040. Beyond intentional use, however, agrifood systems are often contaminated by external sources like wastewater and atmospheric deposition. These microplastics can alter soil structures and be absorbed by plant roots, eventually ending up in edible tissues destined for human consumption.

Beyond physical particles, the report highlights a hidden danger in the form of thousands of little understood chemicals embedded in plastics. While over 16,000 chemicals have been identified in these materials, nearly two thirds lack official hazard classifications from regulatory agencies. There is growing concern that microplastics act as hubs for microbial colonization, creating biofilms that could facilitate the spread of pathogens and increase antimicrobial resistance. While researchers continue to study the long term effects on human tissue and reproduction, the presence of these materials in various food groups suggests an inescapable level of exposure.

To combat this crisis, the FAO argues that simply managing waste at the end of its life cycle is insufficient. They are calling for a coordinated effort that integrates environmental monitoring with veterinary and public health data to create a comprehensive shield against contamination. Interestingly, the agency cautioned against viewing bio-based or biodegradable plastics as an automatic cure, noting that these alternatives can still contain hazardous chemicals and require rigorous testing before they can be deemed truly safe. Ultimately, the goal is a total reduction in plastic reliance across the entire production chain to ensure that solving one problem does not inadvertently create another.
