Does sleep affect athletic performance? What young athletes and parents should know

When preparing a child for a sports season, most parents focus on the tangible essentials like new cleats, water bottles, and updated medical forms. However, according to Dr. Lewis Kass, the Medical Director of Pediatric Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine for Valley Medical Group, one of the most critical components of athletic success is often completely overlooked: sleep. While it might seem secondary to practice and drills, sleep is where the real work happens. It is during these hours that the body repairs muscle tissue, regulates essential hormones, and boosts the immune system, ensuring a young athlete remains healthy and physically capable of competing.

The consequences of skimping on rest are far more severe than mere daytime grogginess. Research conducted alongside physicians from Thomas Jefferson University and members of the Philadelphia Phillies revealed that even a single night of partial sleep can drastically diminish an athlete’s motor skills, strength, speed, and endurance. For youth athletes, this translates to poor decision-making on the field and a heightened risk of injury. Beyond the scoreboard, lack of sleep can trigger broader issues such as diminished concentration in school and declining mental health.

Meeting these needs requires a significant commitment from both parents and children. Elementary school students typically require between ten and thirteen hours of sleep per night, while teenagers need at least nine. In an era where homework, extracurriculars, and social commitments crowd the calendar, enforcing these windows can be a struggle for families. Experts suggest focusing on basic sleep hygiene by creating a consistent schedule for both weekdays and weekends, limiting caffeine after midday, and removing electronic screens at least one hour before bed to allow the brain to wind down.

Changing long standing habits rarely happens overnight, particularly with stubborn teenagers who may resist earlier bedtimes. Dr. Kass suggests that parents frame the conversation around performance rather than rules. By highlighting how extra rest can lead to faster sprint times or shattered personal records, parents can motivate their children to prioritize recovery as part of their training regimen. Ultimately treating sleep as a tool for victory makes it something worth cheering about long before the game even begins.
