Study finds sleep quality as important as duration in lowering heart failure risk

For years, health experts have emphasized the importance of hitting a specific number of hours in bed every night to maintain overall wellness. However, new research is shifting the conversation from quantity to quality, suggesting that how well you sleep may be just as critical as how long you sleep when it comes to lowering the risk of heart failure. According to sleep specialist Dr. Erin Creighton, a massive study involving roughly 95,000 people used wearable technology to track patterns such as sleep regularity and fragmentation, finding that these qualitative markers had significant long term implications for cardiovascular health.

True quality sleep is more complex than simply staying unconscious for eight hours. It involves maintaining a consistent daily schedule for both sleeping and waking, minimizing interruptions during the night, and successfully cycling through all necessary stages of deep and REM sleep. Dr. Creighton warns that many people mistakenly normalize poor sleep, assuming that feeling exhausted or dragging through the day is simply part of adult life. In reality, waking up without feeling refreshed despite spending enough time in bed can be a red flag for underlying issues.

One of the most common culprits behind low sleep quality is obstructive sleep apnea. This condition causes the upper airway to collapse, triggering a fight or flight response in the body that fragments sleep into small pieces. Because this happens unconsciously, a person might technically spend eight hours in bed but never achieve the restorative rest needed to protect their heart and brain. Partners often notice signs first, reporting sounds of snoring, choking, or gasping during the night which should prompt a visit to a healthcare provider.

While there is no magic hack for perfect slumber, experts recommend focusing on foundational habits rather than stressing over an occasional restless night. Establishing a strict morning wake up time and incorporating bright light and physical activity during the day can help regulate the body’s internal clock. Additionally, limiting alcohol and caffeine in the evenings helps prevent disruptions to those vital deep sleep stages. If these lifestyle adjustments fail to improve daytime energy levels, medical professionals suggest pursuing a formal sleep study to uncover hidden disorders before they impact long term heart health.
