Scoring Goals Against Hunger in South Minneapolis

Minnesota United FC is moving its mission beyond the pitch to tackle food insecurity in the Twin Cities. By partnering with Allina Health and The Sanneh Foundation, the club is launching a new meal kit initiative designed to bridge the gap between sports, nutrition, and community wellness. This collaborative effort aims to provide local families with direct access to fresh produce and healthy meals while integrating vital nutrition education into their daily lives.

The project kicks off on October 7 with a hands-on volunteer event where supporters will pack specialized kits developed by experts. To ensure the meals resonate with the diverse community served by The Sanneh Foundation, Allianz Field Executive Chef Adam Reitsma worked alongside integrative nutritionist Jesse Haas from Allina Health’s Penny George Institute for Health and Healing. Their goal was to create dishes that are both culturally relevant and easy to prepare using common grocery staples, starting with a Native American inspired sweet potato succotash.

These curated kits, along with additional proteins and pantry essentials, will be distributed during a weekly community food event at Corcoran Park in South Minneapolis on October 9. For those involved, the initiative represents a holistic approach to public health. While Allina Health focuses on how proper fuel drives an active lifestyle, Tony Sanneh emphasizes that building healthy communities requires meeting people exactly where they are and removing barriers to basic necessities like nutritious food.

This venture strengthens long standing ties between the organizations, particularly the relationship between MNUFC and Allina Health which dates back to the club’s first season in 2017. By leveraging the popularity of soccer as a gateway to social services, the partners hope to foster lifelong habits of well being for families across the region. As Christina Hennington noted, ensuring community members have ready access to essential resources remains a primary pillar for the football club’s identity outside of match days.
