Faith and Science Unite to Tackle Youth Mental Health Crisis

The intersection of spiritual guidance and psychiatric care took center stage during the second day of the A Healing Presence conference, an initiative focused on the church’s role in mental health ministry. Held under the patronage of the Pontifical Academy for Life and coinciding with World Mental Health Day, the gathering brought together global leaders and practitioners to address the growing fragility of psychological well-being, specifically among the youth. The event was organized through a collaborative effort involving the International Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers, the Don Luigi Di Liegro International Foundation, and the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.

During the morning sessions at the Don Luigi Di Liegro International Foundation headquarters, psychiatrist Alessandro Vento provided a sobering analysis of the current landscape for young people in Italy. As president of the Observatory on Addictions, Vento highlighted a concerning rise in substance abuse and warned that new psychoactive substances may be contributing to an uptick in suicide rates. He argued that these crises cannot be solved in isolation, calling instead for a unified front where families, government institutions, and community organizations work hand in hand to ensure those suffering from mental illness receive the dignity and care they deserve.

Beyond clinical data, the conference shifted toward a more personal approach by centering on lived experiences. Caregivers and individuals battling mental health challenges traveled from various countries to share their stories, turning the academic setting into a space for mutual empathy and practical problem solving. These testimonials served as a reminder that healing often begins with being heard and understood by others who have walked similar paths.

Closing out the proceedings, Gina Di Liegro outlined her foundation’s ongoing commitment to psychosocial rehabilitation. By focusing on social inclusion rather than just medical treatment, the organization aims to reintegrate people struggling with mental health issues back into their communities. Through this blend of institutional strategy and grassroots compassion, participants left with a renewed sense of urgency regarding the necessity of integrated support systems for those in crisis.
