From Center Court to Community Plates

The lights may dim and the crowds may leave CFG Bank Arena after a major concert or sporting event, but for many Baltimore residents, the show is just beginning. Through a strategic partnership between the venue, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and the logistics platform Goodr, an increasing amount of high quality surplus food is finding its way off the loading docks and onto the plates of those who need it most. Since launching in 2023 alongside the arena’s renovation, the initiative has already diverted thousands of potential waste products into nutritious meals for local charities.

Brett Hurwitz, vice president of global partnerships for CFG Bank Arena and Oak View Group, believes that hosting world class talent in downtown Baltimore should come with a commitment to the neighborhood surrounding the building. By ensuring that untouched produce, breads, and packaged goods are redirected rather than discarded, the arena aims to create a lasting social footprint that extends far beyond its walls. This effort comes at a critical time as economic pressures continue to drive up demand for food assistance across various zip codes in the region.

Mack McGee of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield emphasizes that this isn’t just about calories; it is about nutrition. Because modern event catering often includes fresh fruits and vegetables, these donations provide essential vitamins to populations that frequently live in food deserts. Once an event concludes, crews work quickly with Goodr to identify nearby nonprofits capable of receiving and distributing the fresh supplies before they spoil.

The impact of this collaboration was recently felt by Helping Up Mission, a local organization dedicated to supporting individuals battling homelessness and addiction. With roughly 3,200 meals provided since the program’s inception, officials describe the arrangement as a universal win. It transforms an industry wide problem of organic waste into a sustainable lifeline for some of Baltimore’s most vulnerable citizens.
