Island Residents Demand Urgent Overhaul of Mental Health Services After Suicide Surge

Dozens of campaigners gathered outside Tynwald this Tuesday to voice their frustration over what they describe as a failing mental health system on the Isle of Man. Organized by the advocacy group ManxPACT, the protest comes in the wake of a sobering government report revealing that suicide rates on the island average 13.9 deaths per 100,000 people annually, significantly higher than the 10.7 recorded in England. Juan Moore, the founder of ManxPACT, described these statistics as horrendous for such a small community, noting that losing roughly one person every month to suicide is an unacceptable tragedy.

The protesters are demanding a significant increase in funding to bring local services in line with UK standards, including the creation of regional community hubs and a dedicated duty clinician scheme to ensure professionals are always available for those in crisis. Current data suggests a stark disparity in investment, with only nine percent of the island’s health budget allocated to mental health compared to nearly fourteen percent across the UK. Moore argued that the current crisis team is effectively in crisis itself, leaving vulnerable individuals without immediate aid when they need it most.

Personal testimonies shared during the rally highlighted systemic gaps where patients feel trapped between tiers of care. Jesse Quirk recounted the hardship of being sent all the way to Sheffield for inpatient treatment due to a lack of local facilities, only to face months of waiting and inadequate support far from home. Other attendees spoke of being told they were not suicidal enough to qualify for certain interventions or feeling caught in an endless loop of referrals without ever receiving hands-on help. Jillian Lewis-Carran reflected on her own struggle decades ago, warning that many today still feel completely alone in their darkest moments because the necessary safety nets simply do not exist.
