Sanitary Failures Mar Feast in Grant Park

A joint investigation by WBEZ and the Sun-Times has revealed a disturbing pattern of health code failures at the most recent Taste of Chicago. City inspectors documented over 160 violations across the festival grounds, finding that more than half of the participating vendors struggled to maintain basic safety standards. While some infractions were relatively minor, such as staff wearing tank tops or slow draining sinks, other reports described nightmarish scenes where food was prepped in nearby bushes or kept at dangerous temperatures under the scorching July sun. In total, over 800 pounds of food had to be thrown away because it became unsafe for consumption.

The findings suggest a systemic failure in how the city vets its participants long before they arrive at Grant Park. Although official rules require vendors to submit a clean health inspection from their home base within six months of applying, analysis shows that fewer than half actually met this requirement. Many businesses operated with outdated passes or conditional approvals. Most alarming were cases where restaurants failed inspections shortly before the event began; one establishment was cited for dozens of rodent droppings just two weeks prior to the festival, only to struggle with temperature controls once they arrived at their festival booth.

Similar patterns emerged among mobile vendors, with one food truck failing five separate inspections during the event after previously being flagged for rat droppings and leaking wastewater. This particular vendor was eventually shut down for a day after officials discovered there was no certified manager on site to oversee operations. These lapses come at a time when national concerns over foodborne illnesses are high, reminding residents of a previous Salmonella outbreak tied to a hummus dish at the same festival years ago that sickened hundreds of people.

Despite these widespread red flags, city officials have not indicated any confirmed illnesses resulting from this year’s festivities. However, experts warn that combining massive crowds with extreme summer heat creates a perfect storm for bacterial growth if temperature controls lapse. As Chicago continues its tradition as a hub for major outdoor gatherings, questions remain about whether current oversight is sufficient and why certain private festivals seem to escape city sanitation scrutiny entirely while public staples like Taste are plagued by recurring hazards.
