Fresh bedsheets and dusk walks: Expert tips for sleep-deprived freshers

Between the whirlwind of themed parties and the pressure of a daunting new reading list, first year university students often find their sleep schedules spiraling out of control. For twenty year old Anna May Dixon, a dance student at the University of Salford, the struggle is real. Faced with a grueling four hour daily commute from Cumbria, she averages just five hours of sleep a night. Her experience highlights a common fresher trap where anxiety over lack of sleep actually creates a cycle of insomnia, making everything from lectures to laundry feel insurmountable by the end of the week.

Psychotherapist and student sleep expert Jo Baker suggests that the secret to better nights actually begins in the morning. Getting outdoors before 11 am allows sunlight to hit specific parts of the brain that regulate our internal clocks, helping the body maintain its rhythm despite late night socialising. While it is tempting to fight fatigue with endless rounds of coffee or trust alcohol to help you drift off after a party, experts warn against both. Caffeine blocks the natural buildup of sleepiness throughout the day, while alcohol acts more like an anesthetic than a sedative, stripping away the restorative deep sleep needed for physical recovery.

Creating a psychological boundary between academic stress and rest is equally vital. Baker recommends simple environmental cues such as throwing a blanket over laptops and textbooks once work is finished to signal that the day is done. Even small luxuries like fresh bedsheets or taking a walk at dusk can prime the brain for slumber. Many students rely on screens to wind down, but since blue light suppresses melatonin, shifting toward journaling or podcasts provides a smoother transition into sleep. Using the bed strictly for resting rather than as an office or dining table further trains the brain to switch off immediately upon lying down.

Beyond habits, staying healthy during those first few weeks is crucial for maintaining stability. The dreaded freshers flu can easily derail any newfound routine, making basic hygiene and early registration with local GPs and dentists essential steps for newcomers living away from home. For those struggling with the emotional weight of moving, Emma Young from Manchester Metropolitan University emphasizes that seeking out alcohol free socials or calling home frequently can provide the mental grounding necessary to stop racing thoughts from keeping them awake at night.
