Brain health is focus on World Alzheimer’s Day

Community spirit took center stage in Rochester Hills this week as local volunteers and corporate partners joined forces to mark World Alzheimer’s Day with a tangible commitment to senior wellness. At the Avon Tower, an energetic group of student athletes from the Rochester Christian University wrestling team spent their afternoon hauling heavy carts loaded with food boxes, ensuring that vulnerable residents had access to both nutrition and vital medical information.

The initiative was made possible through a partnership between Eli Lilly and Planet Harvest, which coordinated the distribution of 1,350 boxes filled with fresh produce and specialized brain health resources. By targeting food-insecure and underserved seniors, organizers aimed to highlight the critical link between diet and cognitive longevity. For many residents, like 79 year old Rose Murray and 84 year old Honorato Neto, the event provided more than just groceries; it offered a chance to discuss personal health practices and share stories about how they maintain their well being into their later years.

Beyond the physical delivery of goods, the day was marked by moments of deep emotional connection and spiritual support. Wendy Jones, the founder and CEO of Next Steps 4 Seniors, gathered several participants together in prayer, creating a supportive atmosphere for those facing the challenges of aging and memory loss. Together with representatives from Planet Harvest and local volunteers, these efforts served as a reminder that combating Alzheimer’s requires not only scientific research but also community care and basic nutritional security.
