Arkansas postpartum mental health screenings required, but gaps remain in tracking care

Arkansas has made significant strides in attempting to protect the mental wellbeing of new mothers, but experts warn that a critical gap remains between policy and practice. While state lawmakers expanded Medicaid reimbursement for maternal mental health screenings last year to ensure accessibility, healthcare providers admit they struggle to track whether these checks are actually happening. Because many clinicians fail to bill for the services, the state lacks a clear picture of how many women are being reached and who is falling through the cracks during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.

The challenge is compounded by a lack of awareness regarding the specific tools used to diagnose mood disorders after childbirth. Rachel Cantrell, a certified perinatal therapist at Bloom Therapy, notes that while standard depression and anxiety screeners exist, specialized tools like the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale often go unused because providers simply do not know about them. This knowledge gap creates a dangerous blind spot, particularly since it can be incredibly difficult for both patients and doctors to distinguish between temporary baby blues and serious clinical conditions like postpartum depression or psychosis.

The stakes for improving these systems are high, as evidenced by data from the Arkansas Maternal Mortality Review Committee. A recent report revealed 69 pregnancy related deaths in the state between 2018 and 2022, citing mental health conditions as one of the primary underlying causes. For many women, the physical exhauston and hormonal shifts following birth lead them to dismiss their own suffering or prioritize their newborn’s needs over their own sanity. Without consistent screening, many mothers never realize that their experience isn’t just part of early parenthood but is something requiring medical intervention.

Beyond the individual mother, specialists argue that untreated maternal mental illness acts as a thermometer for the entire household’s stability. When a mother struggles, it places an immediate risk on the infant and disrupts the overall functioning of the family unit. In rural areas where maternity and behavioral health clinics are scarce, advocates suggest relying on doulas, midwives, and community outreach events to break through isolation. Since symptoms can emerge long after delivery, professionals emphasize that ongoing conversation and repeated screenings are essential to ensuring every single parent gets back on their feet.
