Financial Strain Forces Benefis to Slash Services and Close Clinic

Benefis Health System is preparing to shutter its northwest satellite clinic in Great Falls and dismantle several key healthcare offerings in a bid to stabilize its finances. Starting December 19, the facility which currently provides urgent care and family medicine will begin closing its doors, with those specific services being consolidated at the system’s east campus. Beyond the physical closure, the health system is eliminating a 20-bed inpatient specialty rehabilitation unit and ending all behavioral health services, including psychiatry and psychology. Patients seeking mental health support will now be referred to external providers like Shodair Children’s Hospital and the Center for Mental Health.

Hospital leadership pointed toward systemic financial pressures as the catalyst for these cuts, noting that three quarters of their patient base relies on government insurance. Internal memos highlight a widening gap between the cost of care and what Medicare actually reimburses, alongside national drops in Medicaid enrollment that threaten stability across Montana. According to officials, these measures are designed to prevent the organization from sliding into significant financial loss as they brace for an even more difficult fiscal landscape heading into 2027.

The timing of these reductions has sparked criticism among some locals who point to recent high-profile investments made by the health system. While essential behavioral health services vanish, Benefis recently opened the Goodnow Healthy Aging Center and is moving forward with Sanavita Estates, a luxury senior living community featuring monthly rents reaching up to 7,550 dollars. Opponents of this expansion argue that prioritizing upscale real estate while cutting critical psychiatric care represents a troubling shift in priorities for a regional healthcare provider.

While the transitions regarding behavioral health will stretch into late 2027, Benefis has remained vague about how many employees will lose their jobs due to these closures. These developments follow another period of instability for the network, including a pause in oncology services at a Helena specialty center following the death of a physician last year. Despite these setbacks, administrators maintain that optimizing revenue and reducing operational footprints is the only way to ensure the long term survival of their core medical operations.
