Daughter of man, 82, killed in random attack calls for tighter mental health restrictions

Sapphire Greatorex remembers her father, Gerard Ring, as a man who fought hard to maintain his independence despite battling blood cancer. That resilience was shattered on September 6 when the 82 year old was brutally stabbed in his own front garden in Derby. Mr. Ring survived for three days following the attack, during which time he described the terrifying experience to his daughter, telling her he had simply tried to defend himself against a stranger. He eventually passed away in the hospital, leaving behind a family devastated by a loss that felt both senseless and preventable.

The attacker was identified as Julian Donoher, a neighbor who shared no personal relationship with Mr. Ring beyond living on the same street. During proceedings at Derby Crown Court, it emerged that Donoher suffered from severe delusions, believing Mr. Ring was a pedophile and claiming he had been instructed by police to eliminate wrong uns. The court heard that Donoher struggled with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and ADHD, alongside a history of substance abuse and minor violent offenses. Neighbors noted that Donoher had been acting strangely in the weeks leading up to the killing and suspected he had stopped taking his medication months prior.

Following the hearing on Tuesday, Donoher pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility and was given an indefinite hospital order rather than a prison sentence. This outcome has sparked deep frustration for Sapphire Greatorex and her sisters, Tracy and Kelly. While they acknowledge the role of mental illness, they argue that those with histories of instability must be more rigorously monitored to prevent innocent people from becoming casualties of untreated psychosis. For them, the tragedy is compounded by the fact that their father spent his final hours terrified instead of peaceful_

Speaking after the verdict, Sapphire emphasized that huge changes are needed within the healthcare system regarding how high risk patients are managed in the community. She expressed a desperate hope that other families would not have to endure similar trauma and insisted that tighter restrictions are necessary to ensure safety for everyone. As her sisters voiced their overwhelming anger and grief in court, calling for stronger stances against knife crime and better accountability, Sapphire remained focused on her father’s memory and the urgent need for systemic reform in mental health supervision.
