Nearly 1 in 6 Kids on GLP-1s Developed This Problem Within a Year

As glp-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy become increasingly common tools for treating childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes, new research suggests a hidden cost to these powerful drugs. A study conducted by scientists at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine reveals that nearly one in six children and teens developed a nutritional deficiency within a year of starting the medication. By analyzing the records of approximately 2,000 patients aged 10 to 17, researchers found that about 17 percent were diagnosed with deficiencies or related complications, such as anemia, despite having no previous history of these issues.

The most frequent problem uncovered in the data was vitamin D deficiency, which affected 12 percent of the group, while smaller percentages suffered from nutritional and iron-deficiency anemia. While the study is observational and cannot definitively prove that the drugs caused these deficits, experts note that rapid weight loss often increases the risk of malnutrition. The concern is amplified by how little guidance many families receive; according to the researchers, only five percent of participants received dietary counseling within thirty days of their prescription, and just a quarter received it within six months.

Justin Ryder, an associate professor at Northwestern and surgeon at Ann and Robert H Lurie Childrens Hospital of Chicago, emphasizes that these risks are currently underrecognized. He argues that instead of waiting for a deficiency to appear in blood work, doctors need to implement proactive nutritional management from day one. Because children are in a pivotal stage of growth and development, missing key vitamins and minerals could lead to long term health consequences if not managed carefully through diet and supplementation.

This finding comes at a critical time as childhood obesity rates remain high, affecting over twenty percent of both children and adolescents across the United States. Although the American Academy of Pediatrics officially recommended glp-1 therapy for childhood obesity in 2023, those guidelines specifically highlighted the necessity of pairing medicine with nutritional support. For parents and providers alike, the takeaway is clear: while these drugs offer significant benefits for weight loss, they must be accompanied by strict attention to what kids are eating to ensure their overall health stays intact.
