Nap or quick workout? A doctor explains the cognitive benefits after sleep deprivation

When you are running on empty after a sleepless night, the struggle to concentrate or absorb new information can feel insurmountable. While catching up on rest is obviously the gold standard, a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests there might be another way to keep your brain sharp when a bed isn’t available. Researchers found that a brief burst of aerobic exercise can provide cognitive benefits remarkably similar to those of a nap, specifically when it comes to our ability to form new memories.

To test this theory, scientists kept a group of healthy young adults awake for 30 hours before splitting them into three categories. One group took a 90 minute nap, another engaged in 20 minutes of vigorous cycling, and a third served as a control group by simply sitting on a bike without pedaling. When put to a memory test several days later, both the nappers and the exercisers performed significantly better than those who did nothing. In fact, the cyclists recognized roughly 56 percent of target images, nearly identical to the 57 percent achieved by those who slept.

According to Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and clinical associate professor at George Washington University, these two methods achieve success through very different paths. Napping actually reduces sleep pressure and relieves fatigue by giving the brain what it biologically craves. Exercise, however, doesn’t make you feel any less tired; rather, it seems to act as a workaround that allows the brain to utilize its remaining resources more efficiently despite the exhaustion. It essentially optimizes memory processing without removing the actual need for sleep.

Despite these promising results, Dr. Wen warns against viewing exercise as a replacement for shut eye. Sleep handles critical immune and metabolic functions that twenty minutes of cycling simply cannot replicate. While this discovery offers a helpful tool for healthcare workers or transportation professionals who face unavoidable wakefulness and lack the time for a full nap, it is not a license to ignore sleep hygiene entirely. Using movement as an exercise snack may preserve your memory during a crisis, but it won’t make severe sleep deprivation safe for high stakes tasks like driving.
