The Genetic Secret Behind the Natural Short Sleepers

Aimee Pugh Bernard begins her day while most of the world is still deep in slumber. An immunology professor at the University of Colorado, Bernard typically wakes up around 4:30 in the morning feeling fully energized and ready to tackle a rigorous routine of exercise and work long before the typical business day starts. While friends often view her stamina as a superpower, for Bernard, it is simply a family trait shared by her father and brother.

For years, the vast difference in how much sleep various people require remained a scientific mystery, but recent breakthroughs suggest the answer lies deep within our DNA. Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, identified a specific genetic mutation known as familial natural short sleep. When Bernard provided a blood sample to the team, she discovered she carried this rare mutation, which allows certain individuals to function perfectly on just four to six hours of rest without the cognitive decline usually associated with sleep deprivation.

What fascinates biologists most is not just that these individuals sleep less, but that they seem protected from the usual penalties of exhaustion. One study involving fraternal twins revealed that the sibling with the short-sleep mutation suffered significantly fewer performance lapses during prolonged wakefulness than his counterpart. It appears these natural short sleepers achieve an efficient concentration of deep, non-REM sleep, essentially gaining more restorative value from every hour spent unconscious.

These discoveries have sparked significant interest in the pharmaceutical industry and military sectors, where scientists hope to develop treatments for sleep disorders or enhance human endurance. However, experts warn against rushing into synthetic solutions without a full understanding of the biological mechanisms at play. Molecular biologist Ying-Hui Fu emphasizes that until researchers know exactly how these genes protect the brain, there is a risk that mimicking short sleep via medication could lead to severe long-term health issues like neurodegenerative diseases.

Beyond these rare mutations, general sleep duration is believed to be between 30 and 65 percent heritable across the broader population. Recent analyses involving hundreds of thousands of adults show that while individual common genetic variants may only shift sleep needs by a minute or two, their cumulative effect explains why some people naturally drift off later or wake up earlier than others. Some emerging research even suggests these traits might offer protection against conditions like postpartum psychosis, indicating that our genetic relationship with sleep influences far more than just our energy levels throughout the day.
