Austin nonprofit uses sound baths, yoga to promote mental health during Hispanic Heritage Month

In a quiet room in southeast Austin, the rhythmic vibrations of singing bowls recently replaced the usual noise of city life. Local residents gathered for a sound bath designed to encourage relaxation and mental clarity, providing a rare moment of stillness for those feeling overwhelmed by the daily grind. For participant Aida Levy, the experience served as a way to ground herself and escape everyday stressors, while others found the sensory journey deeply emotional, reporting vivid imagery and unexpected releases of tension.

This immersive session was part of Nuestras Raíces, or Our Roots, an initiative hosted by the nonprofit Sana Yoga in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. By blending sound, movement, and storytelling, the organization sought to bridge linguistic gaps between English and Spanish speakers while fostering a sense of belonging. Executive Director Linda Natera explained that these gatherings are intended to raise awareness about mental and emotional health within their communities, utilizing trauma informed instructors who specialize in helping participants regulate their nervous systems.

The event took place at Central Health’s Southeast Health and Wellness Center in Montopolis, marking nearly five years of partnership between the clinic and Sana Yoga. According to program manager Leonor Dominguez, the facility aims to move beyond traditional medicine by incorporating holistic offerings like Zumba and cooking classes into its care model. This comprehensive approach has since expanded into areas such as Del Valle and Hornsby Bend, reflecting a growing commitment to treating the whole person rather than just physical symptoms.

For many attendees, these wellness tools arrive at a critical time. Participants noted that political tensions and the harsh treatment of immigrants have heightened anxiety levels within the Hispanic community. While practitioners acknowledge that yoga and sound baths did not originate from Latin traditions, they believe these tools transcend cultural boundaries. As attendee Aidet Cooper put it, these practices aren’t about adhering to a specific culture but are instead essential investments in personal health.
