Former football star and broadcaster Chris Kamara has arrived in Guernsey to launch a pioneering mental health initiative designed to give struggling men a discreet way to seek help. The program focuses on breaking down the barriers that often prevent men from speaking out, utilizing a specific code phrase, Here for Chris, which serves as a signal for Calm, Helping, Reassuring and Inviting Space. More than thirty workers across the island’s tourism and hospitality sectors have already received specialized awareness training to recognize signs of distress and guide individuals toward professional support.
During the launch, Kamara spoke candidly about his own history with mental health challenges, admitting that he once adhered to what he called a dinosaur macho approach. He described a period of his life spent wallowing in self pity and silence, noting that the negative voices in one’s head only grow louder when kept secret. By sharing his personal journey, including his initial reluctance to see a therapist, Kamara emphasized that the act of opening up is fundamentally where the healing process begins.
The initiative, funded by VisitGuernsey in partnership with Guernsey Mind, does not expect staff members to act as counselors but rather as trained listeners who can bridge the gap between crisis and care. For Kamara, starting this project on the island is a strategic move intended to create a successful blueprint that can eventually be scaled up across the entire United Kingdom within the next few years.
Reflecting on his first visit to the island after long-standing recommendations from former England player Matt Le Tissier, Kamara expressed admiration for the local community while remaining focused on the urgent mission at hand. He stressed that shifting cultural attitudes around masculinity is essential to saving lives and urged men everywhere to discard outdated notions of strength in favor of honesty and connection.
