A Long Road Back For Mark Allen After Battle With Mental Health

Former world number one Mark Allen has opened up about a harrowing period of personal struggle, revealing that he spent ten weeks in a mental health clinic prior to his recent return to professional snooker. The Northern Irish star made an emotional comeback at the Northern Ireland Open on Tuesday, where he faced his friend Jordan Brown in the first round. Although Allen suffered a defeat, the match served as a poignant milestone in what he describes as a difficult journey toward recovery after spending five months away from the game.

Speaking candidly following the encounter, Allen admitted that he has been in a very bad place recently and had even contemplated retiring from the sport entirely. He explained that he chose to discharge himself from the clinic early specifically to compete in this event, feeling a deep obligation to his supporters and especially his daughter. For Allen, playing this match was less about the result and more about showing his family and fans that he was still fighting, acknowledging that while he is not yet fully recovered, he is far better than he was during his darkest moments over the past few months.

The forty year old veteran, who has claimed twelve ranking titles including the 2022 UK Championship, expressed immense gratitude for the support system that sustained him. He credited his daughter and clinical staff for helping him navigate his crisis and praised World Snooker officials for their consistent outreach. In particular, he noted how meaningful it was for CEO Simon Brownell to visit him personally while he was still receiving inpatient care, highlighting a level of compassion within the sporting community that helped bridge the gap back to competition.

Looking ahead, Allen remains realistic about the challenges remaining on his path to wellness, describing himself as a work in progress. While his tenacity on the baize has always been evident throughout his twenty one year career, he noted that he must now apply those same fighting qualities to his life outside of snooker. As he begins this new chapter of healing and rehabilitation, Allen views Tuesday’s appearance not as a conclusion, but as the starting point of a long process of turning things around.
