Sleeping with your pet could have negative impacts on your health, experts say

For many pet owners, curling up with a furry companion is the perfect end to a long day, offering a sense of warmth and emotional security. However, new research suggests that this nightly ritual might be doing more harm than good for your health. A study recently published in Scientific Reports involving over 1,500 American adults found that people who share their bedrooms with pets tend to experience poorer sleep quality and more frequent symptoms of insomnia compared to those who keep their animals in separate rooms.

Interestingly, the impact seems to depend heavily on the species of the animal. The data indicated a clear negative correlation between sleep quality and co-sleeping with dogs, while cat owners did not show the same decline in rest. Despite these findings, there is a significant disconnect between reality and perception. An overwhelming 93 percent of participants who slept with their pets believed the arrangement was either helpful or neutral toward their sleep, suggesting that many people are simply unaware that their canine companions are disrupting their circadian rhythms through subtle movements, noise, or excess body heat.

Experts acknowledge that this creates a difficult dilemma for pet parents because animals provide immense mental health benefits throughout the day by reducing loneliness and encouraging exercise. Brian N. Chin, an assistant professor of psychology at Trinity College and lead researcher on the project, notes that since stopping co-sleeping entirely is unrealistic for most families, the goal should be mitigation rather than elimination. He explains that while pets bolster our emotional well-being, those gains can be undermined if we aren’t getting enough deep sleep to function properly during waking hours.

To bridge this gap without kicking pets out of the bedroom, specialists recommend several practical adjustments. Investing in a larger mattress to minimize crowding and adhering to a strict bedtime routine can help stabilize the environment. Additionally, frequently washing linens can address hygiene concerns associated with shared beds. While further research is needed to determine how partners or children in the bed influence these results, current evidence serves as a wake up call for anyone wondering why they feel exhausted despite having a cuddly companion by their side.
