Jewel Reveals How She Teaches Her Teenage Son About ‘Mental Health Hygiene’

Singer Jewel is turning her own turbulent past into a roadmap for her fifteen year old son, Kase Murray. In a recent conversation with Us Weekly, the fifty two year old artist opened up about the concept of mental health hygiene, describing it as a set of essential tools everyone needs to navigate their internal world. By treating emotional wellness like physical hygiene, Jewel hopes to give her son the stability and awareness she lacked during her own formative years.

The Grammy nominated singer explains that there is a direct link between thoughts, feelings, and biological responses in the body. This cycle, which she describes as biochemical cascades, informs why she believes it is so vital for teenagers to understand how their mindset affects their overall health. According to experts from Stanford University, these kinds of habits often include simple daily practices such as journaling, maintaining strict sleep schedules, or creating small personal rituals to prevent burnout.

Much of this philosophy stems from Jewel’s difficult upbringing in Alaska and her subsequent struggle with homelessness after moving to California as a teenager. Having survived an abusive household and battling addictions early in life, she understands the profound damage caused when a child’s emotional needs are ignored. However, she notes that there is a delicate balance to strike when raising children today. She warns against the temptation to over empower a child’s feelings out of guilt for one’s own past trauma, suggesting instead that parents find a middle ground where kids feel heard but remain responsible for their own emotions.

Ultimately, Jewel views this process as both a teaching moment and a bonding experience. Rather than letting her son stumble through the same chaos she once did, she aims to be both his friend and his guide in mastering his internal life. For the Foolish Games singer, providing these psychological tools isn’t just about preventing crisis; it is about gifting her son the ability to manage his mind with intention and grace throughout his adult life.
