There was a possible measles exposure at Philadelphia International Airport

Health officials in Philadelphia are issuing a warning to travelers after a potential measles exposure took place at Philadelphia International Airport earlier this week. According to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, an individual carrying the virus traveled through the airport between Sunday evening, September 13, starting at 7:25 p.m., and shortly after midnight on Monday, September 14. The exposure primarily occurred within Terminals B and F, as well as corridors linking Terminals C, D, and E. City officials clarified that this specific incident is entirely separate from other recent exposures reported at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Those who believe they may have been exposed are being urged to review their vaccination records immediately. Health Commissioner Palak Raval-Nelson emphasized that while fully vaccinated individuals have very little to fear, those who are immunocompromised, pregnant, infants, or unsure of their immunity status should contact a medical provider right away. Some preventative treatments may still be available to reduce the severity of the illness or stop it from developing altogether. Anyone currently experiencing symptoms such as high fever, cough, or a characteristic rash is asked to call their clinic before arriving to avoid potentially infecting other patients.

This alert comes at a precarious time for Pennsylvania, which is currently grappling with the largest measles outbreak in the country this year. More than 760 people have fallen ill across the state, resulting in four confirmed deaths—the highest number recorded nationally in over thirty years. While much of the activity has been concentrated in Lancaster County and parts of Chester County, the virus has now reached more than half of Pennsylvania’s counties. Experts attribute this resurgence to declining vaccination rates across various communities throughout the region.

Medical professionals continue to stress that two doses of the MMR vaccine provide nearly total protection against the disease. Because measles is highly contagious—with nine out of ten unvaccinated exposed people contracting it—maintaining high community immunity is critical. Current data suggests that roughly 95 percent of a population must be vaccinated to prevent widespread transmission, yet local reports indicate that vulnerability in area kindergartens has risen steadily over the past few school years.
