The real reason behind Victor Hedman’s mental health struggles exposed before season starts

For nearly two decades, Victor Hedman has stood as a pillar of dominance on the blue line for the Tampa Bay Lightning. However, beneath the surface of his legendary composure, the veteran captain spent much of last season fighting an invisible battle. In a candid revelation ahead of the new campaign, Hedman disclosed that severe performance anxiety gripped him during the 2025-26 season, eventually forcing him to step away from the team in mid-March. He described a suffocating cycle where he felt he was playing on needles, unable to shake off mistakes and fearing that his presence was hindering the team rather than helping it.

This mental decline did not happen in a vacuum but was instead fueled by a grueling series of physical setbacks. Before the previous season even began, Hedman dealt with a broken foot from the playoffs and a rolled ankle. Once play started, hip and elbow injuries further eroded his confidence, including a surgical procedure required just so he could represent Sweden at the Olympics. Despite working with a therapist for four years, the cumulative stress turned game days into sources of dread. This tension peaked during a trip to Vancouver on March 19, when Hedman walked away from a game between periods after managing only six shifts.

Returning to camp this year, Hedman looks like a different man both mentally and physically. He has undergone a significant transformation in his fitness, trimming his weight down to 228 pounds—the leanest he has been since he was seventeen years old. Head coach Jon Cooper has already noticed the difference, remarking that Hedman appears to be flying across the ice. While his physical rejuvenation is evident, he faces a challenging path back to his former glory given the crowded depth chart in Tampa Bay following the addition of veteran John Carlson.

Currently slated for what looks like a fourth-pairing role alongside Max Crozier, Hedman is under no illusions about his standing within the organization. Yet there is a renewed sense of optimism radiating from the captain as he works to reclaim his spot among the league’s elite defenders. By speaking openly about his struggles and prioritizing his well-being over optics, Hedman isn’t just fighting for minutes on the ice; he is attempting to redefine what leadership looks like for athletes facing mental health crises in professional sports.
