12-year-olds with smartphones are more likely to develop eating disorders by 14

Giving a twelve year old their first smartphone may carry risks far beyond simple screen addiction, according to a recent study published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open. Researchers tracking nearly nine thousand adolescents across the United States discovered that children who owned their own smartphones at age twelve were significantly more likely to exhibit symptoms of eating disorders by the time they reached fourteen. While seventy percent of twelve year olds in the study already possessed these devices, roughly twenty four percent of them reported disordered eating habits two years later, compared to less than sixteen percent of their peers who did not have phones at that age.

Dr. Jason Nagata, the lead author and an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, suggests that smartphones effectively place a constant stream of appearance focused content directly into a child’s pocket. During the volatile transition of puberty, children naturally compare themselves to others, but smartphones expand that circle from local classmates to global influencers. Because social media imagery is often heavily curated, filtered, and edited, it can fuel profound body dissatisfaction and lower self esteem. The data showed that kids with early smartphone access were twice as likely to link their personal self worth to their weight.

Experts note that this trend persists despite most social media platforms setting thirteen as the minimum age for account creation. Dr. Nagata’s previous work indicates that nearly two thirds of eleven and twelve year olds are already bypassing these rules to join apps like TikTok and Instagram. This premature entry into digital spaces exposes them to restrictive dieting trends and unrealistic beauty standards before they have developed the emotional maturity to process them critically.

While there is no single magic date for introducing technology, specialists suggest that even delaying ownership by six months or a year can offer mental health benefits. Dr. Mitch Prinstein from the University of North Carolina recommends a gradual introduction to social media rather than handing over an unlocked device with unrestricted access. Parents are encouraged to implement guardrails such as restricting certain app downloads and keeping phones out of bedrooms at night to better monitor usage patterns.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that parental involvement remains the strongest defense against these digital pitfalls. Rather than relying solely on software locks, experts advise families to maintain open dialogues about the deceptive nature of online images and to keep a close eye on shifts in how children talk about their bodies or approach mealtime. Establishing clear ground rules and staying engaged with a child’s digital life may help mitigate the psychological toll of growing up in an era of constant connectivity.
