Public Health Officials Clash With CDC Over Measles Testing Capacity

Health officials across the West Coast are sounding the alarm after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declined a request to validate a high-volume testing method for measles. In a formal letter addressed to CDC Director Erica Schwartz, representatives from California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington expressed frustration that their May proposal was rejected due to other competing priorities. These states argue that relying on low-volume, manual tests leaves the public vulnerable during rapid outbreaks where speed is the only way to stop exponential growth.

The dispute centers on the need for high-throughput diagnostics similar to those deployed during the Covid pandemic. Many public health laboratories invested in advanced platforms capable of processing hundreds of samples in a single shift, yet there is currently no CDC-validated protocol to use this machinery for measles. While some regional labs in Texas and through ARUP Laboratories have developed their own versions, these methods haven’t been broadly standardized or shared, forcing many facilities to stick with slower, labor-intensive processes.

Experts warn that this gap in capability creates a dangerous bottleneck when every hour counts. Because measles is highly contagious and can linger in the air long after an infected person has left a room, quick identification is critical for effective contact tracing and emergency vaccinations. When results are delayed, the window to administer preventative vaccines within seventy two hours of exposure often closes, allowing the virus to spread further into unvaccinated communities.

Responding to the concerns, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services stated that the agency remains committed to supporting local health departments while prioritizing emerging technologies. However, federal officials stopped short of confirming whether there are any immediate plans to validate a high-capacity assay. For the West Coast Health Alliance, this lack of commitment represents a significant hole in national preparedness that could impair patient care if a major surge occurs.
