The Silent Deficiency Threatening Young Adults

For twenty three year old Saskia Reeves Priestley, health was never a primary concern. As a special educational needs teacher and a dedicated football goalkeeper playing four times a week, she considered herself fit and active. That perception shattered the moment she suddenly collapsed at work, overwhelmed by dizziness, nausea, and heart palpitations. While these acute symptoms weren’t typical signs of the condition, the subsequent blood tests revealed a startling truth: her vitamin D levels were practically non existent.

Medical professionals often refer to vitamin D deficiency as a silent disease because its early warning signs are easily ignored or attributed to other causes. For students like Amaka Osu, constant exhaustion felt like a normal part of university life until she suffered a frightening episode of shaking and vision loss while preparing dinner. Dr Suma Uday, a paediatric endocrinologist, warns that without intervention, the deficiency essentially eats away at the bones, leaving adults susceptible to osteomalacia and children prone to rickets. Because doctors do not routinely test for it unless a patient is deemed high risk, many suffer in silence until a crisis occurs.

The struggle to maintain adequate levels is compounded by geography and biology. Most vitamin D is produced when sunlight hits the skin, meaning those in colder climates or individuals with darker skin tones face higher risks of deficiency. Even common habits like wearing sunscreen or covering up can limit production. With recent data showing nearly a quarter of teenagers are deficient, experts are calling for systemic changes. Some researchers suggest following the lead of countries like Canada and Sweden by implementing mandatory food fortification rather than relying on voluntary additions to cereals and spreads.

There is also a growing concern regarding the generational impact of this deficit, particularly among women. Dr Uday emphasizes that failing to address low levels during adolescence can create a cycle affecting pregnancy and newborns alike. To combat this, advocacy groups are pushing for lower thresholds in diagnostic testing to catch cases earlier. For Saskia, recovery came through regular supplementation, allowing her to return to her position in goal with a newfound understanding of what her body actually needed to function.
