More REM Sleep May Come With Major Health Benefits, New Study Finds — Here’s How To Improve Yours

If you have been struggling to hit the pillow on time lately, a new study from Capital Medical University in China suggests there is a powerful incentive to prioritize your rest. Published in the journal PLOS Medicine, the research indicates that consistent REM sleep—the stage where most vivid dreaming occurs—may act as a significant shield against a staggering array of illnesses. After tracking nearly 96,000 participants using wrist accelerometers over several years, researchers found that those with more REM sleep were less likely to develop 83 different diseases, ranging from heart failure and high blood pressure to neurodegenerative conditions like dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

The findings highlight that quantity often dictates quality. Those who averaged between six and eight hours of sleep per night experienced the greatest health safeguards, while individuals sleeping fewer than five hours faced significantly worse health outcomes. Deep sleep also played a crucial role, offering protection against type 2 diabetes and depression. However, the study noted that consistency is key; irregular sleep patterns or frequent nighttime awakenings were linked to increased risks of anxiety, stomach pain, and alcohol abuse. While the authors acknowledge some limitations regarding participant diversity and the possibility that existing mental health issues might cause poor sleep rather than vice versa, the correlation remains striking.

Improving your own sleep architecture doesn’t necessarily require medical intervention for everyone, though addressing chronic issues like obstructive sleep apnea is essential for many. Experts suggest that establishing a strict schedule by waking up and going to bed at the same time every day can naturally enhance both REM and deep sleep cycles. Simple lifestyle adjustments also make a difference, such as cutting off caffeine intake by early afternoon and swapping evening cocktails for herbal tea or water, since alcohol is notorious for disrupting the REM cycle.

Beyond what you consume, how you wind down determines how well you recover. Replacing late-night screen time and social media scrolling with calming activities like reading a physical book or taking a warm shower can signal to the brain that it is time to transition into deeper states of rest. Regular exercise further supports this process by improving overall sleep efficiency. While hitting an eight hour window won’t entirely eliminate the risk of chronic disease, creating a stable environment for your brain to enter REM sleep may be one of the simplest ways to protect your long term cognitive and cardiovascular health.
