Breaking the Clock Barrier for Rural Hunger Relief

For many families relying on the Piscataquis Regional Food Center in Dover-Foxcroft, the struggle to put dinner on the table often comes down to a matter of timing and transport. In rural Maine, where owning a reliable vehicle isn’t always a guarantee, a broken-down car or a ride that doesn’t arrive until after sunset can mean the difference between a fresh meal and an empty cupboard. Until now, those who couldn’t make it during business hours were limited to generic emergency boxes left in the lobby, which lacked any perishable options.

To solve this gap, the center is introducing Fresh Access Lockers, a new system designed to meet clients on their own schedules. Funded by the Eric Klose Fund and expected to be operational by late 2026, these units will feature six refrigerated and nine ambient temperature compartments. Instead of settling for whatever is available in an emergency bin, shoppers will receive personalized grocery packages tailored to their specific household needs along with a unique access code for after-hours pickup.

Executive Director Kelly Sirimoglu notes that this initiative is fundamentally about acknowledging the messy realities of rural life. She explains that staff frequently hear from desperate parents whose only available rides arrive long after the doors have locked for the evening. By implementing this locker system, the organization can finally tell those struggling neighbors that they can make it work regardless of when their transportation becomes available.

Beyond daily convenience, the project aims to bolster disaster response across the region. By partnering with local emergency management agencies and the county sheriff’s office, the food center intends to use these lockers as critical touchpoints during weekend crises or holiday emergencies. It is a strategic move toward ensuring that hunger relief operates on a twenty four hour cycle rather than a corporate calendar.
